TurboTax error IND-996 indicates that an invalid or missing Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) was entered for a dependent.
To fix this, locate the dependent’s 6-digit IP PIN (from the IRS CP01A letter) and enter it in the dependent's information section. If you're using TurboTax Online, close the program, clear your Cache and Cookies, then enter your dependent's IP PIN.
