When you use the desktop download you can prepare and e-file up to five federal returns and the state returns that go with them. There is a $25 state e-file fee for each state return---which can be avoided if you print and mail the state. If you have more than five federal returns to prepare for family members, etc. you can do that, but the additional ones must be filed by mail. The five federal e-file limit is an IRS limit.
