Below are the types of garnishments that can seize your federal refund.

  • Past-due federal tax;
  • State income tax;
  • State unemployment compensation debts;
  • Child support;
  • Spousal support; and
  • Federal nontax debt, like student loans.

If it is for another type of debt, then no.  Your refund will not be garnished.
