Use desktop software on a full PC or Mac. With the desktop download you can prepare and e-file up to five federal returns and their related state returns. If you have more than five returns, the additional ones have to be filed by mail. The five federal e-file limit is an IRS limit--not a TurboTax limit.

When you use desktop software, there is an additional fee to e-file a state return. You can avoid that fee if you print, sign and mail the state return. The state e-file fee is $20 and increases to $25 in March.
