Get your taxes done using TurboTax
Per IRS:
- Any appointed representative must sign the return. If it's a joint return, the surviving spouse must also sign it.
- If there isn't an appointed representative, the surviving spouse filing a joint return should sign the return and write in the signature area, "filing as surviving spouse."
- If there's no appointed representative and no surviving spouse, the person in charge of the deceased person's property must file and sign the return as "personal representative."
You'll file a normal federal and state tax return for the deceased person based on their income and deductions until the date of their death.
In the personal Info section:
- Select Edit next to the Taxpayer's name
- Continue to the screen Do Any Of These Apply To xxx?
- Check the box Passed away before filing Tax return.
If the tax return for the decedent has a refund, you’ll need to complete Form 1310 - Statement of Person Claiming a Refund Due a Deceased Taxpayer. It can be completed in TurboTax.
