2018 and earlier did not require entry of a license code.....but you can no longer update or get states for it unless already installed originally when TTX still supported it.
2019 and 2020 can no longer be installed anew...and required updates and states are no longer available.

If you need to work on either of those two years, for some reason (and don't already have those tax years installed and operational on your computer), you'd have to get the paper forms from the IRS and your state's websites.
