Get your taxes done using TurboTax

I think that you mean the Identity Protection PIN.  There are two different PIN's entered in different places.

The 6 digit IP PIN is entered as follows:

  • Down the left side of the screen, select Federal.
  • Down the left side of the screen, select Other tax situations.
  • Scroll down to Other Return Info.  Click the down arrow to the right.
  • Select Start / Revisit to the right of Identity Protection PIN.

The IRS issues an IP PIN to confirmed victims of identity theft.  See this IRS publication.

The IP PIN validates a Social Security number's true owner and prevents future tax fraud. Most taxpayers don't need one.

However, if you received an IP PIN or CP01A notice from the IRS in the past, you must use your 2023 IP PIN to validate your identity when you file your 2023 return.

If you know you need an IP PIN to file your taxes and you lost your CP01A letter (or never received it), you can:

  • Retrieve your IP PIN online at the IRS's Get an IP PIN site, or
  • Call the IRS at 1-800-908-4490 to have your IP PIN mailed to you (this can take up to 21 days)

TurboTax is unable to issue IP PINs and you will not find them on your tax paperwork. You can only get IP PINs from the IRS.

See also this TurboTax Help.

The 5 digit e-filing PIN is required to electronically file your tax return.  You choose a 5 digit e-filing PIN the first time you e-file, and use it every year thereafter.

If you don't remember it, you can use your AGI (adjusted gross income) from last year's tax return.
