However, if you only have your income, you will probably make out better if you file a joint return as the Standard Deduction for married filing separately is $13,850 or married couples filing jointly is $27,700. This means twice the amount of income in excluded from taxation. Plus, when you file separately, you are not eligible for as many credits as you are when you file a joint return.
