The IRS will begin to accept/reject e-files on January 29. Returns filed before then will remain in pending on the server. Do not try to make any changes to your return while it is in pending. Sometime on or after 1-29 you will get an email telling you if your e-file was accepted or rejected. And...a state return cannot be accepted until the IRS accepts the federal return.
