No need to get contentious. The IRS is not opening to accept federal returns until January 29, and states cannot accept a state return unless a federal return has been accepted. Millions of early returns are waiting on servers, and state returns cannot be accepted while the federal returns are waiting.
Every year, the IRS pulls in a very small test batch of federal returns and accepts them early. You may have been in that test batch. So....go ahead and try to see if you can e-file your state.
