Which dependent tax break?  Where do you see this message?

How old is your son?  If he is over 16, he would no longer qualify for the Child Tax Credit, but he may still qualify for the $500 Non Refundable Other Dependent Credit.

Did he live with you the entire year?  If so, double check to be sure that is what you selected in the personal info section.  To review his information, go back to Personal then click the pencil next to his name.

Did you say that someone else could claim him or that he provided more than half of his own support?  Again, double check his information in the personal info section.

Some rules have changed since last year.

Are you trying to claim the Child Tax Credit and do not have income?  If so, the rules for this credit reverted back to the previous year, meaning you must have income and a tax liability in order to claim the credit.  If you are getting a full refund of your taxes withheld from your paycheck, you would not have a tax liability.  It is possible to get the Additional Child Tax Credit, but you would still have to have earned income to qualify.
