You need to talk to yoru colleagues......that's just wrong.
Desktop allows importing from most all major brokerages, including Vanguard....at least once Vanguard gets them up for "import".
BUT
Folks have to realize that Vanguard's paper/PDF tax forms may be ready and available before the specially-formatted tax import files are ready for use. Same goes for other brokerages.

AND sometimes it is later than you think...especially for those who have REIT holdings in their account, who have historically been allowed to post in March !!!!!
