I agree with you completely, QueenD30, and needing dental work while having to wait on insurance has to be a painful addition to already trying circumstances. The tax code doesn’t help much either (as it so often doesn’t), making it very difficult to claim an incarcerated adult as your dependent, and completely impossible if it’s your boyfriend. (Even though the monetary and emotional support you’re providing him may actually be much greater than what qualifying dependents get.)
But we have to make sure to clarify exactly what the government will allow on a tax return here, and xmasbaby and others only meant that it’s a non-deductible gift for tax purposes (to the IRS). We want to make sure that we don’t add IRS problems to the mix, @QueenD30, but we do wish you the best!
