If you have already started the SS process do NOT also file for the ITIN ... as already posted simply WAIT for the SS# and file an extension if needed.
FYI ... if you file the return attached to a W-7 it takes the IRS more than 4 months to even issue the ITIN and then another 6 months to a year to process the paper return after the ITIN is issued. So stop thinking there is a way to speed things up and just wait as you have been already told.
