Do I need to file an extension if I'm getting a refund?

While you won't receive any late-filing penalties, it's still a good idea to file an extension if you're getting a refund because:

  • If you amend your return and end up owing, an extension protects you from the late-filing penalty.

  • Some states require that you file a federal extension to get a state extension.
