First, start by getting your official credit reports from the three credit bureaus at www.annualcreditrport.com.

You can also get your credit report by signing up for an account at each agency, although you may have to pay for a subscription.  The annualcreditreport.com site is sponsored by the government and is completely free.

If you have an online account with the credit bureau, they will have a dispute mechanism.  But be careful, because using their dispute mechanism may not give you the same rights as using the dispute process required by law.  That involves sending a letter in writing, there are more instructions here.
