Rental Apartment

Hello,

My daughter graduated from Villanove Law School in May of 2019.   We used the 529 to cover her tuition and rent through 2018.  The final semester was paid in 2018, but the rent continued until May 20 of 2019.  Can I deduct the rental payment, now that my 529 is exhausted?

Thanks,

Larry

Hi Larry- Unfortunately, the rent is considered a personal expense so it is not deductible.  When you were paying with the 529 account, applying it to rent gave you tax benefits on the 529 distribution only.
