1098-T

Trying to enter tuition for my son - I answer yes to "did you have any higher expenses"  then No to Coverdell and Tuition program questions; Turbo tax tells me Tuition and Enrollment fees have already been entered, but show $0 and I can't edit.

What screen should I return to, to enter tuition?  I have not entered any $ amount yet

Please try to first delete the Form 1098-T by using these instructions: How do I view and delete forms in TurboTax Online? and then follow these instructions Where do I enter Form 1098-T? to enter the education expenses.

I’m also having this problem. I’ve tried to enter my tuition expenses multiple times, but it keeps resetting to $0 whenever I finish the 1098-T section. It keeps my books and fees amount, but the tuition amount always disappears.

Try starting by going to the Education section of your return using these steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “education” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to education
  • Click on the blue “Jump to education” link

Then, if you are not prompted to enter your 1098-T, go through the entire education expenses section of your return until you reach the screen titled “Your Education Expenses Summary”, then follow these steps:

  • Click Edit next to the student name.
  • On the screen titled “Here’s your Education Summary”, click Edit beside Tuition.
  • Enter the information from your Form 1098-T.

I did that, and it reset again once I returned to the deductions and credits page. It isn't saving the information when I complete the form. I'm not refreshing my browser or going back. I've tried re-entering the form almost ten times now, and it keeps saying "not started" when it directs me back to the deductions and credits screen.

Post deleted.  The error checker at the end fixed the problem.

For the year 2019, the correct way to enter your Form 1098-T is as follows:

In TurboTax online,

  • Sign in to your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • At the right upper corner, in the search box, type in "1098t" and Enter
  • elect Jump to 1098t
  • On the screen, Now Let's gather XYZ's Additional Education Expenses
  • Follow prompts
  • Next screen, Your Education Expenses Summary, select Edit
  • Next screen Here's Your Education Summary, under Tuition, select Edit to enter tuition information
  • See the images below.

If it still doesn't work, use instructions from our user DanaB27 from above to delete the forms (1098-T, 8863 and 8917), then repeat these steps again.

After I've filled in the form and arrive at the screen shown in your second screenshot, my name is not listed. It only shows "Add a Student," even though I've already added my information. The "Edit" button doesn't appear.

Then go ahead and click on Add A Student select your student's name and continue through the education expense interview.

I was having a similar issue. I wasn't able to enter my son's 1098-T info, it kept skipping to expenses.

To fix my specific issue I had to answer NO to the question "Did (name) attend (school) in 2019". It was defaulting to YES, and I kept it at YES because he did still attend that school. But then I was never asked to enter 1098-T information.

Once I answered NO, he didn't attend that school, I was then asked to name his school, and then was asked if he got a 1098-T, and finally I was able to enter the 1098-T.

This caused issues on both my return and his return. I wasn't able to get certain education credits because I was never able to enter the school's federal ID number...that is until I figured out a work around....that I shouldn't have had to figure out!

February 6, 2020 - I use the CD version of the software. There appears to be a bug in the 2019 Turbo Tax Deluxe Software.

For the 2018 tax year, I entered the information on the 1098-T for the first time. When I wanted to enter the 2019 1098-T the software did not ask me to enter the information in Boxes 1 to 10 and the Tuition for 2019 was automatically set to $0.00.

I deleted the 1098-T form as recommended. I was then able to enter the 1098-T although I had to reenter all the college information, Name Address, Federal Id, etc. again.

I called the contact phone number and reported the problem.

Thank you, we have heard that the Education section is being difficult. There is some updating in progress that might address that.

Thank you for using TurboTax.
