1098-T Box 1

When declaring Box 1 of 1098-T, there's an option on TurboTax that says "This is not what I paid to this school"

As a doctoral student, the school was the one who paid for the amount stated in Box 1.

Should I check the option?

If the school paid that amount, it should be reflected by the same amount appearing in box 5 of the 1098-T.

The 1098-T is only an informational document. The numbers on it are not required to be entered onto your tax return. However receipt of a 1098-T frequently means you are either eligible for a tuition credit or possibly your student has taxable scholarship income.

If you have neither to claim, just don't enter the 1098-T.
