It depends on the program you are using.

  1. When you mention step by step. This tells me you are either working in Turbo Tax Home and Business or Turbo Tax Business. If this is incorrect, let us know. To report in Turbo Tax Home and business.
  2. Select the Business Tab.
  3. In the Tab, let's Gather Your Business information, scroll down to Less Common Business Situations
  4. Then go to Business Credits
  5. Here you can list the amounts of the credits that appear in this section.

If you are working in Turbo Tax business, you cannot enter this information in step by step but strictly in the Forms mode. You would need to know the Form number of the credit you are trying to claim. To give you a guideline on what the form numbers to use:

  1. You can go to open form in the forms mode, type in 3800.
  2. After you do this, Form 3800 will appear in the right pane in your return.
  3. Select Quick Zoom in the worksheet, and this will give you all the Business Credit forms and form numbers that will appear in Form 3800 after it is all done.
  4. After you determine what form you need, you go to open form and type in each form number that signifies the credit you are wishing to claim.
  5. After you enter information in all your forms, Form 3800 will report all the business credits you are entitled to.

Let us know if this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I am using Turbo Tax Business. I gave up and just skipped the 3800. I finally found a website that gave a description of the top credits/deductions. Didn't sound like I would qualify for those so I just moved on. Thanks.

Nice answer DaveF1006.  I have a follow on question, please.

I have a carryover business credit from 2022 and therefore need form 3800.  I am using Turbotax Premier.  Do I need to get TT Business to use form 3800?  Thank you!

No, you do not need Turbo Tax Business. If you working in the Turbo Tax software, go to the forms mode in your Premier return. In the top left portion of the screen, select Open Form, then type in 3800. When the choices appear, select 3800 worksheet.

Now once the worksheet appears the right portion of your screen, scroll down to a section that says Credit Carryforwards and Carrybacks and record the information in this screen. Once recorded, the 3800 form will appear reporting the carryover.
