I am currently filling taxes for my father who passed away on February 2020. At the time he got the 1,200$ check in the mail and I (26yo daughter) returned it since I was asked to on the letter. I did not get a stimulus for 600 for him or ANY of the two for myself. That being said, an expert is doing my taxes for me and claiming both of the stimulus checks I didn't receive on 2020 (I only worked 2 months on 2020 and the whole year in 2019, graduated uni on 2018, was his dependent until 2018). Should I also claim my father's stimulus checks for myself or consider the ones I didn't receive last year that my tax expert is getting for me as his? Thank you.
You would be able to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for yourself because you are not a dependent for 2020 and you did not receive the stimulus checks in 2020.
You can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for your father because his date of death was in 2020, but you would have to claim it on his final (decedent) tax return.
