If you're deducting home office expenses for your own business see the instructions below (if this is for a home office for your employer the instructions are attached in the article below):

  1. Open your tax return in TurboTax and search for this exact phrase: home office deduction.
  • Click the Jump to home office deduction link in the search results.
  • On the Business Income and Expenses screen, answer Yes.
    • If you land on the summary screen instead, either edit an existing business or add a new one.
    • You'll be prompted to upgrade to the Home & Business version if you're using Premier or a lower-tier version.
  • Proceed through the business interview. At some point we'll ask if you have a home office; answer Yes so that we'll prompt you to enter your home office information later on. To enter your home office expense along with other common business expenses:
    1. Open your return.
(To do this, sign in to TurboTax and select the blue Take me to my return button.)
    2. Type “Schedule C” in the Search box and select the "Jump to" link in the search results.
    3. If this is your first time entering info about your business, you’ll be asked some questions to start. If you have already entered some info about your business, click Edit next to your business.
    4. Proceed through any additional screens.
      • You might want to enter your 1099-MISC, 1099-K, cash, and personal check income from your self-employment before you associate any expenses with your business, but this is not required.
    5. You’ll then reach the deductions section. On the screen that asks what kind of expenses you had, scroll down and select Home office.  You can select any other expense categories that apply to your business as well. Then click Continue at the bottom of the screen.
    6. Now on the Here's your (type of work) info screen, scroll down to the Expenses section, and select Start  next to Home Office.
    7. Now enter the info about your home office.

If you’re not self-employed, but a W-2 employee instead, follow this link for the employee home office deduction.

I am trying to file my federal and State CA taxes. Everything with the Federal review went fine, but with the State review, it did not. Turbo tax states that "It looks like some of your tax forms aren't ready - Form 8829".

    How do I proceed?

Some forms are not ready for e-filing.   If you have a Form 8829 in your return, this means this form is not ready to e-file.   You will have to wait until this form has been completed by TurboTax to file.

I do not have an exact ETA for Form 8829 other than it is supposed to be ready soon.   Unfortunately, you will just have to check back every couple of days to see if the form has been released for e-filing.

I have similar situation. when I was ready to e-file, turbo tax says Form 3801 is ready by 3/3/2022,Form 8829 cannot e-file. does is mean I have to wait until 3/3/2022 for form 3801 and Mail Form 8829 since it can't be e-file on line? or I just wait for both forms to be available to e-file?

    Thanks

If California Form 8829 is needed for your state return, you’ll need to mail your state return to claim expenses for the business use of your home.

According to the California tables linked via the TurboTax Help article State forms availability table for TurboTax individual (personal) tax products, California Form CA 3801, Passive Activity Loss Limitations will tentatively be available in TurboTax, and will be e-file ready, on 03/03/2022.

California Form 8829, Expenses for Business Use of Your Home, will tentatively be available for print returns on 03/03/2022, but is not supported for e-file.  California does not support the e-filing of this form.  Please see Forms you can file for individuals | FTB.ca.gov for more information.
