If you are referring to line 22 of Form 1040, that is the amount that you want the IRS to apply to your 2020 taxes. So, rather than get your refund in a few weeks, you use part or all of it to pay your 2020 taxes.

If you are referring to a different form, please mention the name of the form.

To add, change or delete a current year federal tax refund to next year's taxes before you file your tax return -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Other Tax Situations
  • Under Additional Tax Payments
  • On Apply Refund to Next Year, click on the start or update button

Or enter apply federal refund to next year in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to apply federal refund to next year

The amount applied to next years taxes will be shown on Form 1040 Line 22

Why am I getting an error on line 22 of form 1040?  I am NOT getting a refund, but owe, so line 20 is blank.  But Turbo Tax is highlighting line 22 as needing an entry!  This is a bug in your software!

I am not getting the same problem. Can you enter a zero in line 22? Will that let you pass so that you can file? @Mary Ellen 1
