Why does the IRS website say this as my refund status? We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe.

The IRS issues most refunds from e-filed returns in about 21 days, although some returns take more time to review. The IRS issues refunds, not TurboTax. This means that we can't say for sure why you haven’t received your refund if it's been longer than 21 days since you e-filed. You'll have to speak directly to IRS to find out more about the delay. Once you have transmitted your return, you are now on the IRS timeline.  If the message is showing on the IRS website, the delay is with them.  It can be due to a number of reasons.  You will need to reach out to them for more information.

To call the IRS: 800-829-1040  hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Mon-Fri

  • Listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • First choose your language. Press 1 for English.
  • Then do NOT choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
  • Instead, press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."  It should then transfer you to an agent.

Once Turbo Tax sends your return to the IRS they are done with their part.  Turbo Tax can't help you find out why it's delayed or help you get your refund.  The IRS doesn't tell Turbo Tax anything.  Now it's only between the IRS and you.

Ive looked on credit karma when I would receive my state and federal. It said state come in on the 18th of February and it did. But federal refund was supposed to arrive the 16, we currently on February 22, and it’s still saying still processing beyond normal time. Should I contact or still wait?

it doesn't connect you to an agent.

This happened to mine on 2/14 when 2/18 should have been my 21 days. 2/15 I received a letter in the mail letter5071C that says they want to verify my ID and to gather my current tax return, an older tax return, and the letter to reference back to for info. I went to the website it said to and followed the process which took all of 5 minutes, however it didn't really ask me for much. I got the email saying I successfully verified my ID through this 3rd party website they use but nothing from the IRS. My status still says the delayed beyond normal time frame message and every thread I read people say their status updates back to processing after verifying identity. It says it can take up to 9 weeks to now get the refund after verifying your identity so I want to make sure my return is back in processing now. I've called several times and so far the IRS just hangs up on me, which is a joke. I did read that the IRS said they are doing many more ID verifications this year pulled at random.. but it's like Holy crap, I haven't even gotten any stimulus checks, I desperately need this money, the least they could do is give you some actual information.

And no this phone number and sequence of choices got me hung up on as well. It's ridiculous that taxpayers can't get ahold of the IRS.

It has been 46 days since mine was accepted.  I cannot get IRS on the phone and it's ridiculous.  No explanation,  no answer,  just get hung up on. I am beyond frustrated.

If you can't get through on the phone, call the tax advocates number listed on the irs website, it's an 877 number. They will put you through to someone. I would definitely ask if you need to verify your ID. This is what held mine up and they are making a lot of people verify! Their online verification system did not work for me even though it gave me the confirmation screen stating I successfully verified my ID, I had to call and do it over the phone. The only way I got through was calling tax advocate line and they transfered my call. Once I verified I got my ddd 5 days later!
