What's the difference between a 1040 and w2

I'm trying to get a house loan and it says need a 1040 and w2. What's the difference

The W-2 is the form your employer sends to you each January reporting your wages & withholding.

The form 1040 is your tax return you file.

"1099"  does not a full question make ... which 1099 are you asking about since there are more than a dozen of them.
