An amended return must be paper filed through the mail.
Once you click the Amend button (which is not available for 2017 quite yet) you will see your refund or amount due set back to $0. You will then come to a screen which will allow you to choose which details you need to add. The rest of it looks pretty much like the original interview. Once you get to the end it will look like you can continue through and e-file. However, you must print and mail the return.

Will it be best to get my refund first than amend it afterwards?
Yes, they do recommend waiting until you receive your original refund. It does take somewhere between 8-16 weeks for them to process the amended return.
