What does this mean?

Today I went IRS website to check the status of my amended return for 2019. And the system shows the following notification:

"Your amended return was received on April 13, 2020. However, it has not been processed. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Please call 800-829-0582, extension 623, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. You will need a copy of your amended return."

I tried to call the number with the extension they provided, but no representative answered the phone because of the extremely high volume of calls.

Should I continue to call the number or just wait?

Just wait.  Amended returns take a long time to process.  And you are lucky it's even showing up at all.

In normal times it takes up to 16 weeks or more to process an Amended 1040X return.  But these are not normal times.

Sorry the IRS has limited staff due to Covid-19.  They just started opening the mail in June that's been stacking up. Back in March the IRS closed their processing centers and stopped processing mailed tax returns.  An IRS spokesperson recently said that they have about 11 million pieces of unopened mail.  So you have to keep waiting.

Just wait ... the paper returns piled up for 4 months and the usual 3-4 month processing times for an amended return is now more like 4-8 months and all you can do is wait.  It is good news that they do have the return in processing and not in a pile of unopened mail so be patient and check the IRS site once a week for a progress update.

I am on the same page. Submitted my 2017 amended refund early this year (March 2020) and website shows the following message as of today:

Your amended return was received on April 13, 2020. However, it has not been processed. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Please call 800-829-0582, extension 623, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. You will need a copy of your amended return.

While filing my 2019 tax, TT CPA mentioned that it might take them a long time to process ,  may be >6 months so I have not made any inquiry with them yet. Let me know if you receive any update. Thnx.

@lkj312951210  - I'm curious to know if this was ever resolved (if your return was finally processed). I filed an amendment for 2019 back in May, they received it in June, and I just saw the same note you said you got. I have tried calling but to no avail since they're facing "High call volume" and the call gets disconnected. Anyways, wondering what's going on with yours....

Amended returns that usually take 3 - 4 months to process are taking 6 - 8 months this year due to the 4 month covid shutdown earlier.   All you can do is wait until they get to your return in the 11+ million envelopes that piled up during the shut down (with  more coming everyday).

I got the same message too for my amended return. Honestly I’ve only ever seen it when someone was audited and freaking out. I’m about to check my transcript and I’ll let y’all know what I see. Usually an audit shows a 420 code on transcripts so praying it’s all good. Check your transcripts that’s all I can say, you can make account on irs site or Google irs check transcripts and it’ll guide you. It does show mine were receivedey June but just today appeared so hooting it’s just a delay

@Deechi

The IRS has not been working on mailed returns until very recently---and an amended return could only be filed by mailing it in until late August 2020 when the IRS began to accept e-filed 2019 amended returns.   Under normal circumstances you would be able to see something about your mailed in Form 1040X after about three weeks, but that is not the case right now.  The usual 4 months for processing an amended return is going to take longer.  Sorry.

MAILED RETURNS

Per the IRS website IRS Operations During COVID-19: Mission-critical functions continue

IRS operational status and alternatives

Processing Delays for Paper Tax Returns: Taxpayers should file electronically through their tax preparer, tax software provider, or IRS Free File

We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it.

Do not file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

If you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.

TurboTax will not know anything about your amended return, and nor will TT know that you put your 1040X  in an envelope and took it to a mailbox.  TurboTax does not get updates on mailed  (or e-filed) returns.

When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site.

I received the exact same message about a month ago. Also mailed my amended return in April. I was able to get through to someone at that number and extension. She told me everything was fine and they didn't need anything from me, just to continue being patient and it would be processed.

Is it online deposit or check?

did they ask for any additional document?

Amended returns only send paper checks ... there is no other option.

How long was it from the time you saw the message until the time you received the paper check?

I submitted my amendment in July and my status just changed to where they are asking me to call extension 623.

every time I call I get disconnected or told that they are too busy. What do I do? Should I keep trying to call?

The phones are overwhelmed right after the holiday weeks ... try again everyday...  first thing in the am ...usually the offices open at 7am your time.

I do. And several times during the day. I’ll just keep trying.

FYI - I submitted mine in May. According to the online status checker it was received June 8th. At some point my status also changed to the one you're seeing. My experiencing was like this:

- Mondays/Tuesdays - the automated message will tell me that there are TOO many people calling with that same topic and to call back later or another day. Midweek and on seems to be better.

- The first time I got through to someone was at the beginning of September (after being on hold for 40 mins), they explained that while my amended return had indeed been in their possession for 16+ weeks, they closed down from July to August (something like that) and that my 16 weeks was actually starting when they opened backup. The rep i spoke to told me to call back November 21st if it still hadn't been processed.

- I called November 21st and had the same thing happen; too many callers calling about the same topic so i had to try again the next day...

- When I got through to someone then, they told me that "You're return was handled on September 8th, so that's when the 16 week process time started" and was instructed to call back December 23rd, if it still hadn't been processed.

Well guess what. It's January 5th and they still haven't processed it. The status online still says to call and I have yet to be able to speak to someone about it. What drives me crazy is how they continue to urge me to check the status online, but online tells me to call. And when i do call, they act like I'm just doing it to be annoying. Anyways, I hope this helps give people an idea of how long you may have to wait - forever.  LOL. I bet my 2020 return will be processed before my 2019 amended return.

I got the same msg as you all and I mailed mine in April and they got it May 11, 2020.  And I am still waiting.  I called all times of the day and still can't get through.  How are you supposed to get the info you need when you can't get through.

They received mine in mid April too and it is almost February. I just need to change my status to independent because the question on TurboTax set me as dependent for some reason. Hopefully I can get all the stimulus payments I missed on my taxes this year before my amended return is finally processed.
