I keep reading about how this stimulus check is affecting the tax return which I don't understand how the stimulus check is affecting our tax return? Or how it affects the people who don't qualify for it but have been accepted for my tax return. Tax returns are done the same way and on the same day every year. Which has been the same routine for the past 10 years if not more.
Here are some ways stimulus checks are delaying your refund. The IRS had to divert a lot of its manpower to processing and issuing stimulus checks in the middle of an already backlogged tax season.. The IRS fell behind last year during the pandemic and has not caught up.
And lots of people have made mistakes and entered the wrong amounts for the first two stimulus amounts they received---so the IRS has to cross check and recalculate their refunds--which delays the process. And when Congress passed new tax laws in the middle of tax season, it meant the IRS had to change forms, test software for all the software companies and approve the new forms and software.......all of the things mentioned are an over simplification---but---see why there are delays?
This is not a normal tax season like "every year" by any means.
