If you did not receive your second stimulus payment, then you may be eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return.

Please be aware, if you received Notice 1444 in the mail but have not received your payment as mentioned in the notice, then you need to request a trace and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return. Please see How do I request a payment trace to track my first or second Economic Impact Payments?

To be eligible for the credit you need to be a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien in 2020 and have a Social Security number that is valid for employment.

You cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else to be eligible.

Your credit amount will be reduced if your 2020 adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than:

  • $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $112,500 if filing as head of household or
  • $75,000 for eligible individuals filing as a single or as married filing separately.

Your payment will be reduced by 5% of the amount by which your AGI exceeds the applicable threshold above. (IRS FAQ Recovery Rebate Credit )

To claim the credit in TurboTax, please follow these steps:

  1. Log into TurboTax.
  2. After entering all your information click "Federal Review" at the top of your screen.
  3. On the screen "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount" click "Continue".
  4. You will be asked about the amounts of first round and second round stimulus payments you received.  If you did not receive a payment enter "0".
  5. TurboTax will then calculate the amount of stimulus payment remaining that you are still entitled to get.
  6. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of the 1040.

Please see How will the third stimulus impact me? for additional information about the third stimulus payment.

Wasn't the missing 600 listed on your 1040 line 30?  It should have been.  It either adds to your refund or reduces a tax due.   Or did you put down you were a dependent in 2020?  Did you get the first 1,200?

yes i receive the 1200.00     but not the 600.00,      3600.00 was but i don't known if  part  of that was for  the second stimulus check.   we filed jointly .            jean

Oh you are filing Joint?  Did you husband get his 1200 and 600?  Is the 3600 on line 30?

3600 is the right amount for a Joint return with no dependents 2400 (1200+1200) and 1,200 (600+600).

So if you already got 1200 then you should only have 2400 on line 30.

If his dependent turned 17 in 2020 he does not get the second 600 for him.  Actually he shouldn't have got the first 500 for him either.  But he doesn't need to pay it back.

So how much is on 1040 line 30?  And how much total did you and him already get (including the first 500 for dependent)?

yes , 3600    the dependent   was 16  for the  first  check,     2400,   for the first  and 0  for  the  second.          600  for  the   dependent.      so  total    3,000

Sorry I still can't follow your amounts.  Are you saying you already got $3,000 total for the first & Second checks?  Then you should only have 600 on line 30.  If you have 3600 on line 30 that is too much and the IRS will reduce your refund.

If you have not filed yet go back and enter the amounts you already got in the 2 boxes.

When you go through the federal review tab it will ask how much you got if any. Or to enter your stimulus payment in TurboTax, type "stimulus" (without the quotes) in the Search box, then click the link that says "Jump to stimulus." Say no to the amounts it shows you. Then 2 boxes will open up for each round. If you didn't get one enter a 0 in the box.

After you have entered your tax information and are ready for the Federal Review, it will be the first question.

If you are trying to trigger it, you can go to Other Situations, answer any questions and click Done. The next automatic selection is Federal Review and it will ask about payments received.
