Refund Status

As many have found out, their refund is taking significantly longer than in the past and it is due to the data input on line 30 of your return. I submitted my return on February 16th and finally received my return on April 28th, less the $1,200 calculation as determined by the software. I too feel slighted by Turbotax for this inaccuracy and feel that Intuit should own up to the fact that they made a mistake. It would be wise for Intuit to apologize for the error and offer some type of compensation for all those affected. My suggestion would be to offer customers like myself a coupon or credit that would be applied to the 2021 purchase of the software. We should all understand that people and companies make mistakes, owning up to those mistakes makes those of us better and more reliable going forward.

I hope that those at Intuit Turbotax will take this to heart and respond accordingly.

Unfortunately, you are correct. If there was a miscalculation for the stimulus payments, the tax return was automatically corrected by the IRS. However, due to the unprecedented demands on their limited resources, the refunds have been delayed for many filers.

Please clarify what happened. TurboTax is software for self-prepared returns and relies on users to enter their details accurately.

The  Recovery Rebate Credit was used to report eligible stimulus payment amounts not received. The 100% accuracy guarantee is for all software calculations, but would not include users accidentally including wrong amounts.

It is up to taxpayers to check their results, including imports, before submitting their tax returns.

I am a self preparer and I am diligent to input my information accurately based upon answering the prompts in the software. When I entered my information there was no reference, or question, regarding whether I received the stimulus payment or not, what I would view as a checking question. Since I totally rely on the software and prompts as I am not a professional tax preparer, I expected the final review would have brought it to my attention as a possible error.

TurboTax can't read your mind.

It is up to you to ensure that all income is reported on your return and all particular circumstances have been covered.
