If you prepared your original tax return using TurboTax, log in to your account, open the tax return you already filed, and click on the link to amend your return. From there, the software will walk you through the process of filing the amendment.

The 1099-HC (MA form) is an informational form like the 1099-B (Federal form) that is your proof of insurance.

However, these forms do not have to be used to file your taxes.

If you are answering questions on the Federal, Health Insurance tab, you will answer that you have insurance and it is not through a marketplace plan.

Form 1099-HC

  • The 1099-HC form is a Massachusetts document that serves as proof of health insurance coverage for MA adult residents.  Every MA resident who has insurance will receive an annual 1099-HC form which is completed and provided by your insurance carrier.
  • You do not need to file Form 1099-HC. The form is informational and should be used to complete a new Schedule HC form with your MA residential tax form. Schedule HC is now a required tax return attachment for all MA residents.  {From: Form 1099 HC

Thank you. Does this mean I have to ammend both my federal and state taxes? I also recently reviewed a 1095-C form as well

No.  Your 1099-HC and 1095-C are not reported on your federal return, just your state return.  So you will only need to amend your state return.

Thank you so much! Will I be able to amend my Massachusetts State Tax return through Turbo Tax? I tried doing so but it said it won't be available until the 15th. I also noticed on the TurboTax website that Massachusetts doesn't support e-filing on Turbo Tax, yet I can amend my MA state returns from previous years. Does this just mean I have to wait until the 15th to e-file my MA state amend?

Yes, you can not amend prior to February 15.

I followed the software instructions and turbotax had me ammend both my federal MA, and PA tax returns with a refund of 0. Only my MA return needed changes. I printed the forms making no changes to the Federal and PA, do I still need to mail the forms to the federal and PA addresses?

No,  you will only mail the Mass Amendment.

And this won't affect my federal or PA tax returns? Even after clicking through the software with no changes?

No, this will not effect what you originally filed.

I used the turbo tax software to unamend my federal and PA tax returns but it ended up unamending everything. I still have the printed amended  tax forms for MA, can I still mail them?

Yes. That would be okay.

When amending my state return, where do I add info to retract the Massachusetts Health Care Penalty ($635)? I should NOT have had this penalty. I can't find the schedule-HC anywhere in the amend return webpages.
