I Received a 12C Only Asking for Personal Identification?

Hi everyone, this is the first notice I have ever received from the IRS. All it is asking for is my name, SSN, Tax period, and the number of pages faxed, which seems odd.

It also states to include my taxpayer ID number on each page. Is it okay to just write my SSN at the top corner of each page and then scan and fax it in? I'm not sure what standard practice is, as I don't want my SSN all over the place. Thank you for the help!

you are sending your SSN to the IRS. !

the number of pages is written so the person on the other end knows they got all of them.

Hi @fanfare yes, I just wanted to make sure. Is it okay to handwrite my SSN at the top of each page and then scan it into the computer to fax over? Or would any handwriting on it invalidate anything? I mainly want to make sure it is okay to handwrite my SSN on each page and that they would still accept it.

Best,

It is not a problem.

Just write boldly since fax can be fuzzy.

I always select high resolution.

Thank you! I will give it a go! I wonder why they just need to verify my identity. Hopefully, I get some money back especially since I owed (and paid). Maybe there was a miscalculation and I get some back? @fanfare

Thank you @Critter-3  I've read through that previously. I just found it weird that I got this several months after paying what I owed and filing. Let alone they don't need any forms or documents. Only my name, SSN, and the "tax period".

Just send what is required ... read the notice again carefully.  It is surprising how many returns get "lost" in the system.
