Have you never efiled yet, or was your efile rejected?

Are you in California or a non-California state?   The method to remove is different.   For example if you are in California, it's in a bundle called "Premium Services", and you have to remove "Premium Services", and then pay by credit/debit card.    We can tell you how when we know if it is California or not.

If it fails, please report back describing exactly which step hits a roadblock.

No that didn’t help. I don’t have the options to change it like the article says

First, please confirm that you are using Online TurboTax and not the desktop software.

You only mentioned that your return was not "accepted" or "pending."  Did you try to efile previously, and it was rejected?   Or have you not tried to efile?    If you have not efiled, or if you efiled, and it was "rejected", you should be able to change it.

If using Online TurboTax, are you unable to even get to the FILE section, and thus can't do any of the steps in the FAQ?

If at the Tax Home there is no FILE tab in the left menu column, then it sounds like you're return interview is closed.  You will need to open up your return interview.   If TurboTax thinks you were finished, the return interview will be closed.   To open it back up at the Tax Home,  look for a link "Add a State".   That doesn't really add one, but opens up the return interview so you can go to the FILE section to follow the steps.

Doesn’t appear to allow me to move the fee. If I enter the cc info and confirm payment, will it charge what my subtotal says.

Sorry, but I don't know exactly what will happen.   I'm a fellow user and have never had to use that FAQ.   The FAQ makes it sound like the fee would be removed after the payment option is changed to pay with credit/debit card, but I have no way to test it.  TurboTax Support should be able to answer any questions about it and can talk you through it, or to correct any charges if you end up being charged for the processing fee anyway.

I figured it out! I was having the same trouble of the fee not removing itself. I had selected the pay with federal return option, not realizing the fee and submitted my return. It was rejected thankfully so I wanted to make sure this time around I wouldn’t be charged. Nothing was working then I clicked downgrade, went to file and was prompted to upgrade to premium. When I returned to the page it had removed itself. Hope this helps.

Will TurboTax reward me for solving their own problem that NO ONE wants to actually pay? Or support us in figuring out? Doubtful. They make it so convenient to pay their ridiculous premium fee with your federal return but don’t inform you it costs FORTY DOLLARS. They sneak the fee in there it’s so shady.
