Just go to My Account >Scroll down to Save & Sign Out. That will save your return and allow to come back later to finish the return.

@ jkaruna

This is an old thread from possibly 2 or 3 years ago that transferred into this new forum.  Unfortunately, all those old threads were given a June 2019 date, which is confusing to users.

There is no longer a "My Account" menu.  The website was redesigned a couple years ago.

You didn't say anything about "your" situation.    If you are using Online TurboTax, Online TurboTax saves your work after every screen.   If you want to know how to sign out of that session, go to the left menu column, and scroll way down to the bottom of that column where it says "Sign Out."    Your work will be saved.

If you're using desktop software (CD/download), you need to say whether you are using the PC version or the Mac version.

I see you also posted in another thread at this link:

See the info there and please continue in that thread with the additional info requested there.

No one does.   As explained higher up in this thread,  this is an old thread from 2 or 3 years ago that transferred into this new forum.   Unfortunately, all those old threads were given an early June 2019 date, which is confusing to users.

You didn't say anything about "your" situation--i.e., whether you are using Online TurboTax or desktop software.

If you are using Online TurboTax, it saves your work after every screen, so you will have a saved online return even if you accidentally close the browser or get disconnected.   If you want to know how to properly sign out of your online session, go to the left menu column, and scroll way down to the bottom of that column where it says "Sign Out."  Your online work will be saved.

The desktop software is a different story.   If you're using desktop software (CD/download), you need to say whether you are using the PC version or the Mac version, and we can tell you how to properly save the file and exit.

The default location for desktop TurboTax returns in Windows is the Documents/TurboTax folder.   However, you should be able to save a desktop return in any folder you wish, as long as you have permission for that folder; i.e., as long as you are using the Windows user account that has permission for the particular folder. Some people have more than 1 Windows account on their computer; so be sure you are logged into Windows in the correct user account.

Here's how to save to a different folder other than the default:  With the return open, click in the top left corner of the TurboTax interface on the FILE menu, and in the dropdown choose "Save As", and in then in the popup file box select the location where you want to save it.

For the tax year 2019 online tax returns, click on Sign Out at the bottom left of the online program screen.

Exiting Online TurboTax is not done that way anymore.  There hasn't been a "My Account" tab for about 4 years.   This is an old thread from several years ago that transferred into this new Community forum in June of 2019.  Unfortunately all the old threads were given a May or June 2019 date of the transfer rather then their original dates.

The website was redesigned a few years ago.   TurboTax Online saves your work after every screen.   To exit go to the left menu column and scroll way down to the bottom to a Sign Out link.

@29606Tatum  If you are using TurboTax CD/Download software, then you have to manually save it as you enter information.

  • On Mac version, with software open as active window, click File in top left near the black apple and TurboTax in far left corner of the computer screen and then click Save. Name file as something you can remember and save to desktop or another place you can easily access when needed.

I'm on the Mac CD version.  I keep getting the window to save the return, but when I try to save it, it keeps telling me it can't save it.  I've also tried saving it using the drop-down "save" menu and get the same result.  I'm afraid to close the program because I don't want to lose all of the work that I've already put into it.

What does it say?

That is almost always a Mac user permissions issue.  Your Mac user account must be an administrator account.

Try saving to your own desktop where you should have read/write privileges.

It's an administrator account.

The drop-down I get says "This document "Untitled" could not be saved as "My Name 19".  I get that same drop-down whether I'm trying to save from the box that appears when I was getting to the end of doing the return or if I try to  "Save" from the drop-down in the program.

TurboTax does not actually do any save itself, it only call the built in Mac save to do that.    This sounds like a local problem on your Mac.  I can only suggest a restart (that will destroy any information not saved) or consult with Apple support.

Did you try saving to your desktop?

I just tried saving it to the Desktop and that time it worked.  This is strange because I have used TurboTax for many years and I've never had a problem like this before.  Before I was just trying to save it to a folder I have called TAXES, so I don't know why this would be anything different.  In any event, I've not got it saved and I thank you for the help.
