You may not wish to remove the dependent from your return even if you can't claim them, as they may otherwise qualify you for other deductions and credits or for filing Head of Household. You can revisit the questions for the dependent and indicate that you are not claiming them on your return instead.

To remove the dependent from a return that you have not filed you will do the following:

  • Log in to your TurboTax Online account, or open your TurboTax CD/Download program
  • Click Take me to my return
  • Click on Personal Info
  • Find the dependent's name that you want to remove from your return
  • Click to delete.

To delete a dependent on an amended/rejected return you will do the following:

  • Log in to your TurboTax Online account, or open your TurboTax CD/Download program
  • Click on Taxes
  • Click on My Tax Timeline
  • Look under the status of your 2016 return, and click to Amend your return/or click Fix my return
  • Once in your return, you will, click on Personal Info
  • Find the dependent's name that you want to remove from your return
  • Click to delete.

Hi,

I want to remove a dependent via amending my 2018 Tax Return.

I followed the steps in this thread and the screens online.

The dependent has been removed from my personal information online. Nevertheless on the final pdf she still shows up on form 540.

Is that a bug in Turbo Tax?

Is it ok to file like this?

How could I potentially remove her?

Thank you in advance,

Kai

@beatrider77 You should not file an amended California Form 540-X if the dependent is still on there. I do not see a dependent when prepare amended 2018 federal and state returns and remove the dependent.

California does have a question in the the state section: "Do you have a dependent you didn't claim on your federal return?" Try saying NO there and see if that fixes the issue.

If you are using the CD\Desktop program you can also manually delete a dependent from the state form:

  1. Click on Forms in the upper right
  2. On the left column, go to California Individual and find Info Worksheet.
  3. Double click and go down to Part IV - Dependent Information and manually delete any dependent into.

Hi @ErnieS0 ,

Thanks a lot for the quick reply.

I tried resolving this online via:

'"Do you have a dependent you didn't claim on your federal return?" Try saying NO there and see if that fixes the issue.'

Unfortunately this did not fix the issue.

I hope you have another idea on how to remove the dependent for the state?

Thank you very much in advance and all the best,

Kai

Hi @beatrider77. If you removed your dependent on federal it should come off California as well. So without seeing your return, it's hard to figure out why the dependent is not coming off.

  1. Try going to Tax Tools in the left column
  2. Select Tools
  3. Select Delete a Form in Tools Center
  4. Check whether you have Form 3506, Form 2514 or Head of Household Filing Status Schedule. Delete those.

You can also select Start Over for California. That will clear out your data but you will probably have to go through all of CA again to fix the amended return.

If your 2020 e-filed federal tax return was rejected because the dependent's Social Security number was already entered on another federal tax return received by the IRS then you will have to print and mail your tax return including the dependent on your return.

To print the PDF download of your tax return you must have a PDF compatible application installed on your computer, such as Adobe Reader - https://get.adobe.com/reader/

See this TurboTax support FAQ for how to change from e-filing to mailing a tax return when using the online editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-topics/help/how-do-i-switch-from-e-filing-to-file-by-mail/01/1007233

@ErnieS0

Thank you so much - removing the dependent this way worked. I tried many others that didn't.

I was also happy TT calculated the new amount due automatically 🙂
