Form 1040X for 2019 tax returns is expected to be available approximately February 12. Instructions will be available when the form is available.

You shouldn't file an amended return (Form 1040X) until your original tax return has been processed and you have received your refund.

1040x is on the IRS website for 2019 why is Turbo Tax not updated?

The 1040-X became available on the IRS website near the end of January. TurboTax is not able to load the form into the software until the final version has been approved. Once it's loaded, then the team must go through testing to ensure that the form is working properly and free of bugs. For this reason, the form is always released in TurboTax a few weeks after the IRS publishes the approved version. As of now, the forms availability chart shows the 1040-X will be available 02/20/2020. You can click here to see the forms chart.

Once I have the 1040X downloaded and filled out, do I need to mail my entire tax return including the 1040X in? The top right corner of the 1040X says in red text, "Do Not File". I have already received my refund and the amended changes do not affect that amount. (I changed my IRA contributions). Can I simply reprint my tax return and mail it to the IRS?

@rkmccown The amended return will need to be mailed in, since it cannot be e-filed. For more assistance, please see: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/amending/help/can-i-e-file-my-1040x-to-amend-my-return/00/26008

@rkmccown

First of all, the 1040X is scheduled to be released on 2/27/2020. Of course, things can and do slide, so I would look for the final form next week (i.e., one that does not say "Do Not File").

Second, the IRS doesn't want your entire 1040 attached to the 1040X; they want only those forms which changed when you entered the updates for the amendment.

Don't send them forms that didn't change from the original return.

I have reprinted my return including the 1040X and separated those forms with changes.

However, the printout of the amendment form shows a watermark that says, "DO NOT FILE. FORM NOT FINAL" I have looked at the form multiple times and am not seeing anything that needs to be added/changed.

ANy ideas?

@rkmccown  If you are using the CD/Download TurboTax software, make sure your software is up-to-date. See the following FAQ. The update for Form 1040-X was just released.

How do I update my TurboTax CD/Download software program?

Every time I start TurboTax, it automatically updates itself and asks me to relaunch.

Any other ideas?
