Filed Amendment 2020 Taxes...Delay?

I have been checking the "where's my amended return" on the IRS site. It was confirmed that my amended return was received on March 26th 2021. A "take action" has been noted on the update saying "please see below for additional info about your amended return". I have contacted the IRS a few times given the information [phone number removed] ext. 623. I have been told that my amended return is fine, just to wait.

Last guy I spoke to at IRS told me there is a backlog and he will try to fix this for me...then we were disconnected.

Its now been over six months, has anyone else been waiting this long? Is there anything we can do or who to contact on the delays? I'm at a loss here, I cannot find any information on delays or estimated times. Anyone else experiencing the same issue?

Any information at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone, I hope you are all well.

Millions have had this delay for much longer.   The original return had to be processed first and any unemployment corrections as well before the amended return will even be looked at... so did you ever get the original refund and any unemployment correction refunds?

Hi, thanks for replying.

Yes I filed and processed both federal and state. Both accepted and processed. Both federal and state took money from md. I filed an amendment for both. I never had unemployment.

The state amendment was already processed and adjusted. Refund was given, all good on state side.

Made me cncerned that state was completed in a couple of months, then IRS is over 6 months. Have you heard or read anything on someone's amended return being completed?

The amended return will take 6 months or more to process AFTER the original return has processed if you filed the 1040X prior to that date.  Check the IRS site once a week until you see progress on that return :    https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return

Filed my 2020 return originally in early Feb, amended return on 4/2/21. Still waiting as of 10/1 for them to process my amended return. Same conversations with the IRS you had. All appears fine, just backlogged.

The 6 month (or more) amendment processing  time clock starts when the original refund has been released  OR  the corrected refund (for the unemployment exclusion)  has been released which ever is later.   All you can do is wait and check the IRS site once a week until you see progress :   https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return

Same situation as my daughter.  Her regular federal return was processed and she received her refund (never needed to file anything related to unemployment).  Then she needed to file a very simple amended return which was filed on March 27th.  When checking the status of the amended return this  message comes up:

"Your amended return was received on March 27, 2021. However, it has not been processed. We apologize for any inconvenience

Please call 800-829-0582, extension 623, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. You will need a copy of your amended return."

Called the phone number provided in July, representative apologized for the delay and said give it 30 more days -- it's now October which is way beyond the 30 days.  It's also way beyond the 6 months from when she received her federal refund.  However,  the same message appears on the status website.  If the IRS does not want phone calls regarding these amended returns then they need to change the messaging and start processing.  I understand the Covid thing and being backlogged but come on this is beyond ridiculous.

We filed our original return in February.  They took the money out of our account immediately.  We then mailed an amended return in May.  It's been 8 months & there is no update whatsoever.  According to our transcript, it was forwarded for processing on September 14.  Nothing since then.  I've called every month, & each time, they just tell me to call back in 30 days.

Did your daughter ever receive her refund on her amended return?

You are definitely NOT in the 'waiting' mode alone!

The IRS has been struggling to keep up its normal processing times because of a number of pandemic-related reasons, including a workforce shortage, a backlog of paper returns, and errors related to the expanded child credit and other changes.

As of June 23, 2021, they had 17.5 million unprocessed individual returns in the pipeline.

The processing time for an Amended Return is presently 6 months or more.

Click this link from the IRS for more info on Amended Returns.

We called the IRS a couple of times only to receive an apology for the delay.  We kept checking the IRS.gov website and it never updated, then one day, even though the website had not updated the refund showed up in the mail....no letter, only a check.  I can say the check did reflect interest for the 7 plus months the refund was not processed.  I'm glad it's over with!

Yep...im in the same boat. I amended my 2020 tax return in March 2021. When I checked the status of my amended return, it said it was recieved but wasn't processed yet. It was recieved on March 27th 2021. When I checked the status of mine it told me to take action and call the IRS and  the extension I was supposed to dial was 623 as well. I have since then talked the IRS and they told me the same information as they told you. I really need that refund. Hell, I've actually received my 2021 refund before my 2020 refund. What's up with that?? I'm getting super impatient. I hope I receive my refund soon.

Good to know I am not alone here. They noted my amendment was recieved March 26th...its been a FULL YEAR now. Nothing we can do but wait I suppose....I have asked around and the only answer is to wait. Its terrible to wait over a year, but what else can we do now... :(

My amended return was also received on March 26th 2021, and as of today, April 5th 2022, I'm still waiting.  Glad to know that I'm not the only one in this situation. All we can do is wait.

I just recieved noticed yesterday that my return was adjusted. Only took a year a few days to happen....now I am told to wait an additional 3 weeks for a letter. More waiting, but we are moving in the right direction eventually. Hang in there...
