Federal E-file error IND-031-04 (mismatch against AGI) with correct AGI.

I tried to e-file federal and state 2019 taxes, and got a reject code IND-031-04 from the feds (the state rejected theirs because the feds had rejected).

I called the IRS, and asked the agent whether she could answer yes-or-no to the question "Is my 2018 AGI xxxxxxx?" (real AGI obscured). She agreed to do that, and then confirmed that the AGI I was reading from the Turbo Tax e-filing was correct (same number from my 2018 pdf and paper copy). Note that I paper-filed for 2018.

Then she asked about exactly how the AGI in turbo-tax was formatted (it was "xxx, xxx.", including the decimal but no cents (apparently the irs software can't deal with cents). She asked me to remove the decimal and try again. I did that, and got another IND-031-04 bounce.

I went back to the turbotax screen with the AGI again, and turbotax had restored the period after I erased it, so I'm guessing that it's ignoring my changes to the format.

The IRS agent also mentioned there was a way to e-file without the AGI value, using only my PIN.

My questions:

* Is there a way to e-file without the 2018 AGI? If so, how do I do that?

* If the 2018 AGI is required, is there a way to change the format that turbo-tax is sending to the IRS when it e-files?

* If there's nothing I can do to e-file, how do I go about recovering the money I spent for e-filing?

When did you file 2018? If it was late in the year try putting in zero for the AGI. And see, https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/rejections/help/what-if-i-entered-the-correct-agi-and-i-m-still-getting-an-e-file-reject/00/27031

If your spouse died during 2019 there is a problem efiling and you will have to mail your return

If you can’t get it to efile you will have to print and mail it.

Be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

Thanks, setting it to 0 worked. In 2019, the IRS received my mailing (2018 return + check), cashed the check, and lost the return. They emailed in late December that I hadn't filed, so I sent in a duplicate return by mail then.

The AGI used to accept e-filed returns must be a copy of the original value, defaulted to 0 before the end of the year. Apparently the IRS agents don't know that.

Thanks for your help!

PS. I found I had to change the value to 0 twice: the first time, I changed it to 0 and hit the continue button, and turbo-tax changed it back to the 2018 AGI. I changed it again, and then the 0-value "stuck".

The IRS uses your prior year AGI to combat fraud.

You can find your 2018 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) by:

  • Looking at line 7 on page 2 of your 2018 Form 1040; or
  • You can request a transcript of your 2018 tax return from the IRS to ensure you have the right number. You can request your transcript online at the following link: Get Transcript

Check these items as well to ensure you have the correct number.  If you:

  • Filed late last year after mid-November or your return was processed after that time—try entering 0.
  • Amended your return last year—make sure you’re using the AGI from your original return, not the amended one. (If you only have a 1040X form, it’s on line 1, column A).
  • Rounded your AGI to the nearest dollar—be sure to round up when it’s 50 cents or more and down when it’s 49 cents or less.
  • Filed with your spouse last year—you and your spouse have the same 2018 AGI. (Don’t split the AGI amount or enter 0 for one of you).

Time-saving Tip: If what you entered is correct and you continue to get a reject, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed. In this case, your only option would be to print and mail in your return.

This article will give you instruction on how to print and mail your return.

I paid extra to do a state e-file.  If it is not possible the recommendation is to print it and mail it.

What is the answer to the question below?

* If there's nothing I can do to e-file, how do I go about recovering the money I spent for e-filing?

The fee is actually not for e-filing.  It is for our program to assist in creating your return.  Sometimes, unfortunately, you are not able to e-file.  Please see the Help Article here for more details.

@Rocky Moskat   Are you using the Desktop program?  And paid the $25 to efile state?  Yes you can get that refunded.  But for the Online version the fee is to prepare the state return whether you efile or print and mail.

Hi VolvoGirl

Yes.  It IS the Desktop program.  I paid for the Fed and State.  And paid the $25 additional to e-file.

Thanks for the link you provided.  Will let you know how it turns out.
