Does anyone know why the IRS suddenly needs to "verify" my identification through a 14 digit code on a letter they haven't sent?

TurboTax gave 02/08 as my deposit date.
I tried to go to IRS.gov to verify the refund timeline.
Website said needed to "verify" who I am, and I needed the 14 digit code on a letter.
Will this interfere with the actual return? Or is that just so I can log in to the IRS?

Here is an FAQ about handling identity verification requests from the IRS.

If you have not received a letter yet, you will be.

most likely there is been some suspicious activity regarding your account. the IRS wants to make sure that the return they have in your name is really from you.  until you respond any refund will be held up.
