If you filed your original return with TurboTax, there is no charge to amend your return.

If you used TurboTax Online, simply log in to your account and select “Amend a return that was filed and accepted.” If you used our CD/download product, sign back into your return and select “Amend a filed return.” You must file a separate Form 1040-X for each tax return you are amending.

I wasn't clear.  I filed ASAP, then it turns out I owed, the assistant online wasn't much help.  I waited till the proper forms would be updated, they weren't.  I owed a lot of money, so I amended, now I'm getting money back.  Should I pay the original, am I getting the difference.

@brda310199  Your amended return should have included the amount you owed from your original return, which then would result in a refund or additional taxes owed.  The amended return assumes you already paid taxes owed with your original return.

Check line 16 on your amended return, it should show what you "paid" on your original return.  If you have not paid yet you should  remove any payment listed on your return.

I'm still not 100% clear on your question. Did you file an original return with a balance due and then amend the return and are now due a refund? Is the money you say you are getting back a portion of the original balance due payment?

This is a portion of the Amended Return (Form 1040X). You will want to make sure you answer the questions correctly about if you made your payment already or not, then the calculation will be correct based on what you have or haven't paid.

@brda310199 If you filed and did not pay, then make sure Line 16 of your amended return (1040X) has not amount in it.  Then your amended return would be the way it is suppose to be.

@brda310199  Your welcome, the amended interview assumes you paid the original amount of taxes owed, since it is transferred to the amended return in the steps of the interview.  The amended return and original return are processed separately from your original return.
