Amending tax return: amend return button does not work

I paid for Turbotax in 2024 and filed my 2023 tax return. I have just become aware that I need to amend my return. When I logged in to Turbtotax and clicked on my tax documents, I found the button that allows me to amend last year's return. When I click the button that says "amend using Turbotax online" nothing happens. I am not sure why it is not working. Do I need to purchase Turbotax again in 2025 to be able to amend last year's return? What am I missing?

On the very first screen after you log in, it asks you to start. When scrolling down further, it says Your tax returns & documents. You can expand that, click on 2023, expand Amend, and the button is there.

How to amend my return?

I can see the button. When I click the button, nothing happens. I have clicked it multiple times. I have logged in with different internet browsers. The button simply does not work. My wife is a programmer and she checked it out. She says the button is "dead."

To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Start the 2024 online tax return by entering some personal information then click on Tax Home on the left side of the screen.

On the Tax Home webpage -

Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents.  Click on the Year 2023 and Click on Amend (change) return

If the link to amend is not active, clear cache and cookies on your web browser.  If that does not correct the problem then change your web browser to one of these that you are not currently using, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge

Unfortunately this is still not resolved. I have tried using both Safari and Chrome.

When you click on the Year 2023, what is the status of the tax return, federal and state?  It should indicate, Accepted, Rejected, Printed, Print for mailing

Mine says accepted.

You will have to contact TurboTax support for assistance with this problem.

It looks like I will need to submit this by mailing in a paper return. If so, I will probably not be using TurboTax for my taxes this year. I cannot seem to get help when I need it. I tried calling TurboTax but could not get through without paying extra.

Use the key words Billing Issue when contacting support.  That should get you to an agent.

For amending the 2023 tax return, you will have to download one of the 2023 desktop editions and install the software on a personal computer, Windows or Mac - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You will also have to download the 2023 tax data file from the online edition so you can open the 2023 return with the installed 2023 software.

On the Tax Home webpage -

Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents.  Click on the Year and Click on Download .tax file

If you paid for the 2023 online account, you need to contact TurboTax support so they can push a 2023 desktop installation file to your download account at no charge.

Once the 2023 software is installed. click on the File menu at the top left of the desktop program screen.  Then click on Open Tax Return.  Browse to the location where you downloaded the 2023 tax data file.

To amend -

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home & Business)

Click on Other Tax Situations

Under Other Tax Forms

On Amend a return, click on the start button

A 2023 amended tax return can only be printed and mailed, it cannot be e-filed.

Will we able to efile 2023 amended returns after 1/27/25 ? Why have the button to amend online if it doesn’t work?

That is a TurboTax program issue when the Amend link does not work properly.  It does not affect everyone who used the TurboTax online editions.  When it gets corrected is currently not known.  Hopefully within the next two weeks.

The 2023 amended tax return, Form 1040-X, cannot be e-filed when using TurboTax.  Only the current tax year, 2024, amended return can be e-filed as long as the original 2024 return has been e-filed and accepted by the IRS.

Same problem. 2022 and 2023 tax returns were e-filed with TurboTax and accepted. The "Amend using TurboTax Online" button is not working for both years.

Is there a timeline when the problem would be fixed?

Thank you!

Thank you for your helpful reply. I will go ahead and send in my paper 1040x.

How to file:

Do not include your old 1040 nor your revised 1040 because the Form 1040-X reflects any changes there and becomes your new tax return.

Include any new/corrected document only if it shows federal tax withheld, and include in order only those Sequence Numbered tax forms and Schedules that changed or were added due to your amendment.
Attachment Sequence Number is on all the forms and Schedules that come after 1040.

If you are using TurboTax you have to do this by visual comparison. The program won't break out those pages for you.
If your amendment dropped a form,
you should include with Form 1040-X a new copy of the form(s) with -0- in the appropriate lines.
---
If any forms specify an attachment, put all those attachments at the end in the same order as the forms they go with.
---
Mail to the address shown for your location in the most recent Instructions for Form 1040-X.

Same problem here. My online TurboTax for 2023 "amend" process goes in an infinite loop.

I purchased the desktop version of 2024 TurboTax Deluxe thinking may it would let me amend 2023. Now I find out I must have the 2023 desktop version of TurboTax.

The On Demand Tax Guidance says "You used TurboTax Online to prepare your previous year return. Follow these instruction to get a download of the version you need.

The link leads me to nothing.....just a bunch of complaining posts. Where am I supposed to get the 2023 download without paying for it again?

I have spent TWO HOURS on this just trying to complete a 1040-X with a simple amendment. If I could do it by hand, I would! I am just not an accountant. This is painful and unnecessary. Why can't it just WORK like it's supposed to?

Thanks......kind of sort of....

@silverleaf1 If you purchased one of the 2023 online editions you will need to contact TurboTax support so they can push a 2023 desktop installation file to your download account at no charge.

These types of answers are not helpful. The question is not where to find the link, but that the link does not work.  I am experiencing the same thing and keep getting the run around from TT support.

I had to amend 2023 on desktop version, directed there from online version. Once completed, will mail but I need to get the corrected information back in the TT system.  My 2024 taxes won't be correct unless I do.  Online if I use TOOLS> Transfer last years turbo tax return from your computer" doesn't allow me to do so because "once you register your tax return or pay any turbo tax fees, we can no longer clear and start over" .

Would desktop 2024 allow me to upload .tax2023 amended return to the system so it is reflected in my 2024 tax preparation if I used the desktop version 2024 this year?  Thanks!

Yes, if you used the desktop version to Amend your 2023 return, you can transfer your amended return into the 2024 desktop product and prepare your 2024 return.

Here's more info on Transferring a Prior Year Return.

The issue has NOT been resolved.

"Amend using turbo tax online" button does not work as of May 2nd 2025.

When trying to use Turbotax Desktop product as suggested, I'm sent to a page where I have to purchase that software. I've already paid TT for my return, I should be able to amend it without paying for addition software. Please advise.
