Amending Return

Hello,

I am amending my 2025 tax return. I had made the mistake as filing as an independent when I still qualify as a dependent. My father needs to claim me as a dependent so I am making that change. However, when I initially submitted my tax return, I had attached a 1095-A form that I had gotten from my father. Now whenever I try to amend the return and delete the 1095-A form, TurboTax still highlights it as a problem and asks me to delete the 1095-A, even though I have already deleted it. It won't let me file the return electronically. I am unsure of what to do.

Thanks so much for your guidance.

Did you try deleting the actual form or just in the interview mode?  Also, were you already in the Amend process or are you doing this without starting the amendment?

You will need to start the amendment prior deleting the form and then to delete the form take the following steps:

  1. Correct your filing status, marking that someone can and will claim you as a dependent on their return
  2. Then go to delete a form and look for form 8962 and the 1095-A.
  3. Delete the 1095-A
  4. Then delete the 8962

This should allow you to move forward.

  1. From the left rail menu in TurboTax Online, select Tax Tools (You may have to scroll down on the left rail menu.)
  2. On the drop-down select Tools
  3. On the Pop-Up menu titled “Tools Center,” select Delete a Form
  4. This will show all of the forms in your return
  5. Scroll down to the form you want to delete
  6. Select the Form
  7. Click on Delete.

Always use extreme caution when deleting information from your tax return.  There could be unintended consequences.

Hello Vanessa,

Thank you for your help. I selected "amend using turbotax online". Then I changed my filing status, then when the process told me to delete the 1095-A form, I did so. Despite this it continues to tell me that I can't submit electronically.

Thanks so much for your patience and responses.

Is it giving you a specific error code?  How long ago did you file the original return?  Was it processed yet?  Did your dad already file his return?

There is no error code. I filed my return on Feb. 4th. It was processed and I have already received my return. My father has not filed his return yet because the IRS keeps rejecting it because he needs to claim me as a dependent.

My understanding is that I must amend my return to enable him to file me as a dependent. Additionally, I need to delete the 1095-A form that he provided me when I was trying to file independently. This could've been avoided if both my father and I knew what we were doing.

I think this may be some issue on turbotax's end because even if I try to file by mail, I am unable too. The process just gets stuck loading.

I recommend that you file the amended return if you can and mail your father's return, including you on it.  An amended return can take from 12 -18 weeks for the IRS to process.  Leave your return as it is.

  • Your father won't be able to Efile.
  • Have him mail it with you included as a dependent.
  • Whether your amended return is filed, not filed or completely processed, the IRS will identify the duplicate Social Security Number and send a letter asking for information.
  • You can then respond to the letter,
  • There may be a case manager's phone number in the top right corner. (This isn't always the case).
  • You can then resolve this with correspondence.

Just ‌a note: This will not increase your chances of an audit.
