HI there, I need to amend an amended return on turbotax (related to a 1099-R). I've seen in previous posts that you can do this by deleting the existing 1040-X from the first amendment. However, when I do this and then do amendment, the refund amount does not reset to zero (it instead shows the total refund after the first amendment). For context, I mailed the return in, didn't file it electronically. Any help would be appreciated, and if the question isn't clear I can hopefully clarify further.
To clarify, are you saying you mailed in the first 1040X?
Was the first amended return filed?
Hi there. Yes - That is correct. The first amended return was mailed in.
you must have a print out or pdf of your revised tax return that corresponds to 1040-X No.1
then you can revise your tax return for 1040-X No.2
The simplest way is to prepare your correct tax return (using TurboTax for example, or other means) and print it.
Then lay the paper printouts of both returns (revision No.2 and revision No.1) side-by-side.
You now have all the information needed to prepare Form 1040-X by hand.
It's pretty straight-forward.
The blank form in fillable PDF format and its instructions are available at www.irs.gov.
Refer to the Instructions for what is to be attached to Form 1040-X.
Do not include your old 1040 nor your revised 1040 because the Form 1040-X reflects any changes there and becomes your new tax return.
Include in order only those Sequence Numbered tax forms and Schedules that changed or were added due to your amendment.
you have to do this by visual comparison. The program won't break out those pages for you.
Mail to the address shown in the Instructions.
In Part III explanation start off with
"This is amendment No.2 after previously amending"
This helps the IRS know what to do.
