Amended tax return rejected

Hi,

I have e-filed my federal return, which has already been accepted (but not yet received refund). Later I found that I missed a 1099-INT form to report. Therefore, I made the edit in TurboTax Deluxe Windows desktop version and get it passed all necessary check.

However, upon e-file my amended tax return, it was rejected and the email from TurboTax says -

F1040X-041 - If Form 8888 is present in the return, then Form 1040-X, 'RefundAmt' must be equal to Form 8888, 'TotalAllocationOfRefundAmt'.

I checked and could see that on my form 8888, TotalAllocationOfRefundAmt is my updated refund amount, which is less than the original tax return. On form 1040-X, RefundAmt is empty because I'm owing money on line 20.

So how should I file the amended tax return in this case? Thanks in advance!

You will need to delete your Form 8888 to e-file your amended tax return.

First of all you should not e-file your amended return until you receive your refund. The amended return is processed separately from your original return, it doesn't "catch up" with the original return. You will still receive the original refund and you will need to pay back the difference.

To delete Form 8888:

  1. Open your return by clicking on Fix my return.
  2. Scroll down to Tax Tools on the bottom of the left side menu.
  3. Select Tools.
  4. Click on Delete a form (third on the list at the bottom of the screen).
  5. Find Form 8888 on the list of forms.
  6. Click Delete to the right.
  7. Confirm your Delete.
  8. Click Continue in the lower right.
  9. Click Continue with my return.
  10. Click Continue to file and resubmit your return.

I am having a similar issue, but I use Turbo Tax Deluxe for Mac. Are the instructions for deleting Form 8888 on the Mac different? I find an option under the "Forms" tab to "Remove Form" but this option and all the others under that tab are greyed out and unavailable.

My particular situation is I am filing an amended return for a deceased person. There is no refund due, just an additional payment. I'm not sure why Form 8888 even is an issue in this case, but Turbo Tax won't let me file until I fill it out.

1. Yes. The Mac is different. You locate the form you want to delete and then use your keyboard and press the actual delete key.

2. If you owe money, you do not need to allocate the refund so Form 8888 should not be filed.

Thanks. Yes, I understand I do not need to use the form. But it continues to reappear when I try to eFile. On my Mac, I open the forms view and Form 8888 is not shown in the panel to the left with all the other forms. I need to use the "Open Form" icon to enter Form 8888 and have it appear. I can then go to the Forms drop down menu and select "Remove Form 8888." It deletes. When I continue on with eFiling, Turbo Tax again indicates the form is present. Thanks for your time on this, but it sure seems like something buggy with the software.

Your suggestion of using the delete key doesn't work.

Have you tried completely closing Turbo Tax and reopening it to see if any updates are prompted on your software?
