Amended return

I mailed my return today.  This afternoon I learned I had a 1099-NEC waiting at work.  I thought everything was now on the W2 I received.  The 1099 is substantial so I amended my return.  I have to mail again.  I looked at the forms and nowhere does it indicate that it is an amended return.  How do I do that?

You have to use a Form 1040X which will be available late in February.  You do not just prepare a new 1040.  Do not mail that.   Un do the changes you made and wait for the Form 1040X.  You have to be able to work from the return exactly as it appeared when it was sent to the IRS.    And...mailed returns take longer to be processed.  You do not want to confuse the IRS by sending in two mailed returns at the same time......the delay that causes will take months to unravel.

Thank you.  I wasn't going to do anything until someone replied.  I knew the simple steps weren't the right steps.  So I'll wait for the 1040X, after I undo what I did tonight.

One last question.  Would 1040X be available thru Turbo or do I have to d/l from IRS.gov?

TurboTax supports e-File of 1040-X IF you e-Filed 1040 with TurboTax and it was ACCEPTED.

you get one shot so make sure it is correct before you SUBMIT.

You should wait until your tax return is fully processed before filing an amended return (Form 1040X).  If you have a refund due from the return you mailed wait until you receive it prior to sending/submitting your amended return.

If your return is pending, here's what you can do:

  1. Find out if you even need to amend
  2. Check your e-file status. It usually takes 24-72 hours for your return to be accepted by the IRS

We recommend that you wait to file your amendment until you have received your refund or three weeks from the date of payment of taxes due.

Thank you for your explanation and directions.  It will be nice to get the 1000 refund but to pay back 800 not so!  Oh well.  I will follow your advice.
