Hi, I filed my taxes already, they are so simple I just went ahead and did them like usual, but I had a hip replacement and completely forgot to claim the 6K that I paid out of pocket for it. Would it be beneficial for me to amend it? Is it too complicated and just forget about it?
Thanks in advance!
It depends, but probably not. You said your tax return was "so simple". Does that mean you did not itemize deductions (i.e. you took the standard deduction)? Medical and dental expenses are deductible as an itemized deduction, but only to the extent that they exceed more than 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). The Standard Deduction if filing single is $14,600, and if Married Filing Joint it is $29,200.
So, if you are single and have an AGI of $60,000, you must have more than $14,600 of deductions in order to itemize, and your deduction for medical expenses would be $1,500 (assuming no other deductible medical or dental expenses).
