I filed my 2021 taxes last week. I forgot to include a small $14.31 1099 Int income amount. I tried amending it but it didn't let me. Forum says I need to wait to get the refund (I owe the state of CA). Is that accurate? Also, when I amend and resubmit the 2021 filing, will I need to pay a filing fee again and will it automatically calculate the amount I have to pay? It's small but I've never had to amend a return so I am curious of the process.
Yes it is accurate. You do not want to amend your return until your original return has been processed. To know that the IRS has processed your return would mean receiving your refund. Additionally, the 1040X is not available and will not be available until about 3/17/2022.
Once you receive your refund, then you can prepare the amended return. The amount of interest is so small that there is a chance it will not change the outcome. If the amendment does not show that you owe tax, you do not need to file the amendment.
If you owe CA you can always make the payment so that you do not continue to incur penalties or interest charges. If you send in payment make sure you indicate that you are paying the tax for 2021.
If you need to amend your tax return in TurboTax, there is no additional fee.
