2020 Return filed in Oct, Still Waiting

I filed Oct5 2021 for 2020 Tax return and on the IRS site under "Refund Status" even after entering all the data including the refund amount, it comes up with nothing. I tried calling IRS and now they don't even let you stay on hold, asking you to call next day.. Is it normal to take this long to refund? I wonder if they even got my certified mailed return.. Anyone else waiting this long?

For this matter, you will need to reach out to the IRS directly.

Here are some steps that may help you get through quicker:

IRS:  800-829-1040 (7AM-7 PM local time) Monday-Friday

When calling the IRS do not choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

  • First choose your language.  Then listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • Then press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."
  • It may then ask for your SSN, but do not enter it.  Just wait.    If it asks for SSN a second time, still do not enter it.
  • Then it will get "tired", and you'll get another menu.  Choose 2 for "personal".
  • Then in the next menu choose 4 for "all other inquiries", and it should transfer you to an agent but expect a long wait.

I have tried the sequence of prompts over several days now and each time it would say we are busy and call back later.. Maybe I need to call the first thing in the morning..

it is strange that the auto status check online does not even confirm they got my return

The reason it isn’t listing information on your 2020 return is because they are now working on 2021 returns in the system. You won’t be able to get information on your 2020 return there anymore you’ll need to call or access your transcripts online .

I managed to reach someone in IRS. They said they are backlogged with 6M returns still to be processed. So just wait.
