2020 Amended return

I amended my 2020 return on the turbo tax website then printed and mailed the return to the IRS on September 23rd, 2021 and it has been over 30 weeks. The IRS said the information is still unavailable. Why is it taking so long to hear about my return. Should I resend my return to the IRS using certified mail. I believe they never received my return

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return.  During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check.  They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns.  You can watch for information here:

@Mollysbaby - DO NOT RESEND - figure the IRS is running 9-12 months backlogged for amendments (I had mine clear in May and it was 12 months)

So IRS says expect 20 weeks or longer and it's actually 52 weeks ??

In my case,

IRS Amended Return Status says " 1040-X received but not processed".

This showed up shortly after mailing it in.

Still waiting after 9 months.

IRS says they're processing in order received.

I find it hard to believe.

@fanfare - my experience as well...got the message that it was received and not processed.....took fairly close to 52 weeks until it actually was resolved... At least the "received and not processed" message was comfort that the IRS actually had it....the scary part is they  claim they will get back to normal processing turn times by the end of the year....yet, as  an example, the number of paper filed returns which has hovered at 8.2mm backlogged for the past few weeks, reposted yesterday at 8.5mm backlogged.... could there be that many people overseas filing via paper for the June 15th deadline?????
