I use the free file program to file my 2020 return Now I need to file a 1040 x to add my ira distribution and taxes withheld to get my refund. How can I e-file an amended return? When I go to last year's website, for amend return, it says "Amending a prior year return is not currently supported by IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax". I have purchased the turbotax 2021, but there is no option for 2020 1040x. Please help.

An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 16 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.
Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.
The federal amended tax return, Form 1040-X, for tax year 2021 is estimated to be available in TurboTax on 03/17/2022
Are you saying you want to amend a 2020 return that you prepared using Free File last year? Since TurboTax is no longer participating in the free file program you will need to contact customer support to get the software to amend your 2020 return.

@DoninGA and xmasbaby0 are correct. You'll have to print, sign, attach your 1099-R form and mail in your 2020 Amended income tax return. The IRS does not support E-filing prior year amended returns. Only current year returns can be E-filed.
